Blood Bank made available to this press with the consent of the donor have shown that journalist, Desmond Lewis aka Tiger, of Premier News has over the past 2 years donated a total of 87 pints of blood free to the Blood Bank.
Asked why he is doing it, Mr. Lewis said modesty: "to contribute in my own small way to society".
Looking very healthy and buoyant Mr. Lewis is calling on patriotic Sierra Leoneans to take on the venture to donate blood.
"You or a member of your family may need it some day," Mr. Lewis admonished. "You will not need to worry then, because one good turn always deserves another".
At the Blood Bank at Connaught Hospital the doctor in charge, Kadi Yullah said that Mr. Lewis' gesture is something laudable.
"Considering the shortage of preserved blood in this country, it is just good enough that some people take it upon themselves to help out," Dr. Yullah said.
She disclosed a lot of category of people needing blood some time or the other. Pre and Post-natal women, accident victims, those going through surgical operations and so on, are those who can benefit from blood donations.
On the matter of blood replacement in the body, Dr. Yullah said that if not donated, smoothing like a pint of blood is host naturally through the death of the red blood cells.
"So if you don't give it you lose it".
Dr. Yullah said prospective donors need not fear that through the screening process their medical status will be exposed.
"It can turn out to be a blessing in disguise," she said "if somebody happens to find out either their HIV status or other infections like Hepatits B which is incurable, then emergency action can be taken to nip everything in the bud".
Desmond Lewis said he has donated blood all over the country and he is doing it mainly for vulnerable children.
