Western companies are pushing to acquire vast stretches of African land to meet the world's biofuel needs. Local farmers and governments are being showered with promises. But is this just another form of economic colonialism?

Everything will turn out alright. Correction: everything is going to get better. There will be new roads, a new school, a pharmacy, even a proper water supply. Most of all, there will be jobs -- 5,000, at the very least. "If there are jobs for us, then it's a good thing," says Juma Njagu, 26, who hopes to be able to leave his meager existence as a planter and charburner behind soon.

All Works of Life (AWOL), which objective is to bring together people of all works of life, past Wednesday, November 11, at the Mohamed Kallon Building at Charlotte street, launched its annual National Achievements Awards for 2009.

The Chairman of AWOL, Mr. Kwaku Lisk, told journalists before the launch that this year’s theme ‘put Sierra Leone First’ was chosen deliberately to reflect the strides that are being taken by various organisations to rebrand this country.

Sixty-two women who have spent over two years of their adult lives cleaning State House, hoping against hope that by doing so their lives will be changed forever for the good, have found to their disappointment that the seat of government is using them as pawns to avoid either giving the cleaning contract to companies or employing proper cleaners to do the job for pay.

The women spoke exclusively to Peep! narrating a very sorrowful tale about how humans can use and misuse their fellow-men by creating for them false hopes only to later pull the carpet from under them.
