The Moyamba District Council is at present engaged in very rich negotiations that will very soon result to the district enjoying the facilities of a Hydro-Electric Plant worth a little over US$6 million.
This was disclosed to this medium by the Moyamba District Council Chairman, Mr. David Woobay, in an exclusive interview past Monday, in the district headquarter town of Moyamba.
The hydro-electricity will be generated from the SINGINI FALLS at the border between Bagruwa and Lower Banta Chiefdoms in the Moyamba district.
Three hydro teams from UNIDO, comprising Chinese and Indians, and who described the Singini Falls hydro as the most viable in Sierra Leone further said that it will have the capacity to produce at least eight (8) Megawatts of electricity supply for Moyamba, Njala and parts of Bo district, the Moyamba District Council Chairman, Mr. Woobay further said to Peep Magazine.
At present, UNIDO has got US$2 million for that project and Global Environment Facility is to fund 30%, the equivalent of which is US$1.7 million, while the rest will be funded by the Sierra Leone Government, DFID and the European Union, Mr. David Woobay again disclosed.
A feasibility team from Geneva, led by Sierra Leone's Minister of Finance and Economic Development, Dr. Samura Kamara were most recently at the Singini Falls Site, while the Executive Director/General of UNIDO, Dr. Kandeh Yumkella, is slated to visit Sierra Leone more specifically for that project on 15th March, 2010, according to the Moyamba District Council Chairman.
Mr. Woobay however said that the 2 ½ mile stretch of road leading to the site of the Singini Falls shall have to be done by the District Council, and yet again revealed that according to the UNIDO and Geneva Teams, the Singini Falls have the potential to general between 8-15 megawatts of electricity.
Talking on the Pipe Borne Water supply for the Moyamba Township, the Chairman revealed that Le2.9billion has been slated to ensure that there is sustainable water supply for Moyamba Town, and that a Water Engineer at Fourah Bay College, Dr. Barrie, had thrice visited Moyamba in that regard.
He concluded by saying that the World Bank had given Le100,000,000 to restore Pipe Borne Water Supply to Moyamba Township in 2004, which sum was indeed ploughed into its intended purpose, but regretted very much to say that lack of understanding on the part of the consumers who wanted and still want anything for free could not make the project sustainable.
"All that is left for us to do now is to advertise the project and award the contract to the most appropriate bidder, and also, we are at present engaged in massive sensitization of the people on the dire need to pay Water Rates, the Moyamba District Council Chairman, Mr. David Woobay rested the interview with Peep Magazine. |
