The doctor in charge of Bood Bank at Connaught, KadieYullah has told Peep Magazine that she and her staff members are in a desperate rush to collect blood before April 27th, the date that H.E. President Ernest Bai Koroma set for the start of free medical treatment to pregnant women, kids below five years and lactating mothers.

“These groups are the most vulnerable when it comes to blood,” Dr. Yulla said. “So when the green light will be given for free treatment there is going to be a mad rush for blood”.

Dr. Yullah said the problem is compounded by the lack of storage facility for donated blood.

“If blood is not kept at the right temperature it may go bad and of no use”.

Dr. Yullah has been moving over the past week to try to create storage facilities in all the Districts.

“It’s painstaking really,” Dr. Yullah said.

Dr. Yullah is encouraging patriotic Sierra Leoneans to donate blood.

She said that blood is so very important for the human being.

“Blood collects oxygen from the lungs and transfers it to the cell and removes carbondioxide (a waste product of metabolism) and exales it” Dr. Yullah explained.

She said the average human has between 11 and 12 pints of blood it depending on the body weight.

shortfall

“Any serious shortfall may be a problem that needs transfusion and if there is no blood in the banks, a victim may end up dying”.

Dr. Yullah said that on average the bank needs at least 14000 units of blood yearly but Blood Bank hardly gets that.

She said response from the public is not encouraging. “Some people ask for cash before donating blood.
